Octomom, or Nadya Denise Doud-Suleman (born July 11, 1975), better known as Natalie Denise Suleman, is a media figure from the United States who gained widespread fame after giving birth to the first set of surviving octuplets in January 2009. Their high-order multiple birth caused a stir in the realm of assisted reproductive technology, and the California Medical Board decided to look into the fertility doctor who was responsible for the birth.

Suleman’s octuplets were born after she used IVF to have her six children (IVF). After originally denying she had ever received government aid, she admitted on the Today show on NBC in April 2012 that she had in fact been receiving such aid.

At the age of 21, Suleman underwent IVF treatments overseen by Dr. Michael Kamrava, who was subsequently removed from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

Suleman had her first child, a son named Elijah, in 2001. Ameerah, her first daughter, was born in 2002. Suleman continued IVF treatments, which resulted in three more pregnancies: fraternal twins Calyssa and Caleb and sons Joshua and Aidan, for a total of six children: four males, two daughters.

Suleman revealed in 2009 that she had stored six embryos from earlier IVF attempts. She detailed how she had wished for a simultaneous transfer of all remaining embryos into her uterus. Transferring more than three embryos to a lady of her age is uncommon. Suleman claims that she tried for a sixth pregnancy to prevent the loss of the frozen embryos. Even though Dr. Kamrava had frozen embryos available for use, she consistently proceeded with fresh cycles.

The California Medical Board considered Kamrava’s transfer of twelve embryos to be an “extreme” deviation from the accepted norm of care in June 2011. The California Medical Board decided to remove Kamrava’s medical licence on July 1, 2011, after considering his case and three others, including Suleman’s.

Around the world, people were talking about the octuplets as the news broke. People’s reactions were mostly harsh, and some even included death threats. There was a little protest in front of Suleman’s house once the news broke that she was with octuplets. Many people were worried that Suleman’s plan to have more children would place an undue financial strain on taxpayers through public assistance.

Despite Suleman’s assertion that she could provide for her children on her own, she was actually collecting disability payments from the government for a back injury she sustained in a riot in September 1999. She received these payments between 2002 and 2008, even though she was out of work at the time.
