Smiling Face on the Sun
A smiling sun is an ubiquitous motif in popular culture and art, but earlier this week, NASA revealed an actual photo of the sun’s surface bearing the grin. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, which investigates solar activity and how it affects the planet, took the image. The sun’s surface was covered with two black spots, a curved line, and what appeared to be eyes and a grin. These dark areas are coronal holes, which are darker because they are less heated and dense than other portions of the sun, according to a blog post on the NASA website.
The space research organisation captioned the photo, “Say cheese! Observed in ultraviolet light, these black areas on the Sun are known as coronal holes and are locations where rapid solar wind gushes out into space. Today, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the Sun “smiling.”
