Did you know what a 2000 year old mummy eat for his breakfast? Well Lindow Man has a story to tell

King George I of Great Britain had once in the 18th century ordered that every pigeon dropping should belong to the crown. Even to an extent that, he even put guards at site where the birds roost to impose his pronouncement. Every people of the country was ordered to consider pigeon dropping as a part of the official British belonging.

King George I

This was not because he were any bird lover or an ornithologist, this was clearly a management decision. There was by-far, a recognised practical reasoning. It was because in those days pigeon manure was used to make gunpowder.

Other than using it as a fertiliser, pigeon droppings were also one of the three major ingredients in making gunpowder. Pigeon dropping consist of an element called saltpeter.

Saltpeter was extracted from the pigeon guano and mixed with charcoal and Sulphur to make the gunpowder, an absolute necessity in warfare with the advent of the gun. Today of course saltpeter can be synthesized with modern chemistry however in a historical context pigeon guano would have been a valuable commodity in earlier history when other sources were not as abundant or still largely undiscovered.

This was never revised and therefore this might not be wrong to say that even today, every pigeon poop is an official property of the crown.
