Storm turned the South Dakota skies green
A particularly violent storm approached South Dakota in the US, the skies there turned green. Just before a thunderstorm moved across the area, unsettling pictures of the strange colour of the sky over Sioux Falls, South Dakota, circulated on social media. According to the National Weather Service, a “derecho storm” ploughed through most of South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa, knocking out power to nearly 30,000 people for several hours.
According to the National Weather Service, storms are classified as derechos when they have sustained winds of at least 93 km/h and leave a 400 kilometres trail of destruction. The wind speed during this specific storm was 159 km/h. Although South Dakotans are accustomed to derechos after experiencing two of them recently, the green sky was a very unique sight.
